VDES

The evolution of AIS is on the horizon

Revolutionising communication systems to enhance safety and e-navigation for global maritime fleets through new VDES two-way, low-speed communication capabilities.

The current system for automatic ship identification, known as Automatic Identification System (AIS), is set to evolve with the introduction of VHF Data Exchange System (VDES).

This new digital system is designed to enhance maritime safety and support more efficient shipping route planning and traffic management, thereby benefiting shipping companies, ports, and authorities. Additionally, the system holds the potential to optimise the sustainability of the global shipping industry, resulting in substantial environmental benefits.

Spearheading this digital transformation are the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Organization for Marine Aids to Navigation (IALA).

VDES system will improve global maritime operations
Leading the way in maritime safety and communications.

Elevating maritime safety standards.

The VHF Data Exchange System (VDES) is a revolutionary communication system designed to advance e-navigation and the digitalisation of shipping. Space Norway, in collaboration with Kongsberg Discovery and Kongsberg Seatex, has positioned Norway as a global leader in the development of the satellite component of the system.

Revolutionary technology, new opportunities.

VDES enables two-way, low-speed communication with ships globally, including those operating in the Arctic. As the next generation of the AIS system, VDES operates within the same frequency range. By supplementing land-based station coverage with satellite coverage, it will provide a seamless and globally comprehensive system for low-speed communication to and from ships.

One of the significant advantages of VDES is that it does not require new antennas onboard ships or on land, as it can utilise existing VHF antennas.

Space Norway expects the commercial deployment of VHF Data Exchange System to commence in 2027.
