ASBM

The Arctic Satellite Broadband Mission (ASBM) represents the first significant project delivering military value in the northern regions. Two dedicated satellites, ASBM 1 and ASBM 2, provide satellite-based broadband access in the Arctic.

These satellites host payloads for both the Norwegian Armed Forces and the U.S. Space Force, ensuring secure and reliable communication for military operations. Additionally, Viasat has a payload onboard the ASBM satellites for commercial broadband access.

MicroSAR

Norwegian authorities diligently guard the nation’s expansive ocean territories. To support this effort, Space Norway is developing the radar satellite MicroSAR, designed for extensive ocean monitoring. This vital project, aimed at governmental purposes, lists the Norwegian Armed Forces as a key customer.

The first satellite, a test and demo unit with full operational capabilities, is scheduled for launch in 2026 and will play a critical role in monitoring Norway’s vast ocean areas.

Fibre cable to Jan Mayen

Located between the Norwegian Sea and the Greenland Sea, the polar island of Jan Mayen endures harsh conditions due to its geography and severe weather. This isolated position necessitates the installation of a fibre cable to provide critical connectivity to the area and its residents.

The Norwegian Armed Forces, responsible for the island’s airport and other infrastructure, have tasked Space Norway with laying and operating a subsea fibre-optic cable that will ensure stable internet access and robust data capacity.
